Prof. Robert Loewe, MD,
Dermatologist Vienna - Science

The treatment options for patients are always as good as the current state of medical knowledge and therefore subject to constant development. For this reason, I dedicate myself in addition to my clinical activity also passionately to dermatological research. As a researcher and scientist, I have been the head of my own research group at the Department of Dermatology of the Medical University of Vienna for many years, which primarily deals with basic research into skin cancer.

Personal achievments

  • basic and translational research
  • Discovery of the mechanism of action of dimethyl fumarate (the most commonly prescribed drug in Germany for the treatment of moderate and severe psoriasis). Prof. Loewe also holds a patent of this mechanism of action for further therapeutic use.
  • First description of the antitumor effect of dimethyl fumarate in human melanoma
  • Discovery of a new side effect of a systemic therapy of Parkinson's disease
  • Discovery of a new mutation in a family with inherited mastocytosis
  • Description of epidermal growth factor (EGF) as an important factor in the distribution of melanoma cells via the lymphatic system.
